Insects Illuminated

Have you ever wondered what those bugs are that flutter around under your streetlight? Join naturalists Rick Levy and Alissa Iverson at Chatfield Farms to illuminate our under-appreciated nocturnal friends.Using UV lights projected onto sheets, we will attract, observe and collect moths, beetles and other insects. Learn more about nature at night, while helping scientists at the Garden's better understand the insect biodiversity present at Chatfield Farms.

Rick Levy studied entomology for his graduate work, leading him to coordinate the Gardens' collection of arthropods. Alissa Iverson works to expand the Gardens' Natural History Collections and communicates about science and nature to general and scientific audiences. Join us for this family-friendly nighttime adventure.

Alissa Iverson, Floristic and Outreach Coordinator:

Alissa collects specimens for the Kathryn Kalmbach Herbarium of Vascular Plants and the Sam Mitchel Herbarium of Fungi through targeted biodiversity surveys. Additionally, she connects people with plants, nature and science through educational media and activities. She uses her background in research and education to interpret the science conducted within the Gardens' Research and & Conservation Department for a public and scientific audience.

Rick Levy, Scientific Data Manager:

Rick's primary focus is ensuring accessibility and quality for data and digital assets associated with the Gardens' natural history collections, restoration and conservation research. His graduate work focused on entomology and insect ecology, leading him to coordinate the Gardens' collection of arthropods.
